Today during the Open House we spotted a white camas (Camassia leichtlinii alba) which stood out dramatically from the many purple ones. It is a variant of the purple camas. This is not the “death camas” (Toxicoscordion venenosum) which is poisonous. That flower is also white but looks quite different from a camas flower. However, the bulbs of the two plants are almost identical and pose a danger to those who gather the bulbs for food. While the camas bulbs (white or purple) are a nutritious food, the “death camas” is toxic and can cause serious illness and death. There are no “death camas” in the Meadow.
